Raleigh GAA Club’s first Camogie Team

Saturday May 22nd saw the first ever SE Division Camogie tournament. The Raleigh women made history by having the club’s first ever Camogie team. On the day we had the following players, Bethany Ebbit, Colleen Dunleavy, Laura Kavanaugh, Sarah Mills, Sandra Holland, Ann Scheunemann, Amy Hogan, Emily Gish, Alayna Wood, Amy Doyle, Taylor Thomas, Elizabeth Guertin, Emile Guertin, Jazmin Guitterez all from Raleigh. On the day we added a player from Charleston named Caityln Lees.  Special shoutouts to Sharon Doyle, Erin Shannon and Steve Shannon for all of the work on the sideline.

As they warmed up you get see the excitement in every face. The first match of the day was Atlanta v Charlotte. Atlanta being the most experienced team in the division, and Charlotte been working in secret for 2 years.  When the time came to get on the field our women played Charlotte. I couldn’t have been more proud as they put the skills taught into practice. Atlanta playing for a decade, Charlotte for 2 years, and our team for 6 weeks. Final score was Charlotte 3-1 Raleigh 2-0. Our goals were made by Elizabeth Guertin and Jazmin Guitterez. Neither of these ladies had ever played camogie until we got our field on March 29th.

The second game was against the powerful Atlanta team. Raleigh played their hearts out in the hot sun, and held the strongest team in the SE, and possibly in the country to on a score of 2-7 to 0-0. There were fierce challenges throughout, and our women should be proud of the results on the day. Both Charlotte and Atlanta team gave us great compliments and look forward to future matches. We will take the lessons learned back to train even harder for the future.
