Gaelic Football

Gaelic football is an Irish outdoor team sport played by both men and women. Players compete to kick or punch the ball into or over the opponent’s goal, and can move the ball up the field using a combination of carrying the ball, kicking it, and bouncing it off the foot.

Basics

  • Hitting the football over the bar and between the uprights counts as one point. Inside the net is three
  • Players may carry the ball in hand for up to 4 steps. They must then either bounce the ball on the ground or off the foot.
  • Players may pass the ball either by striking with a fist or by kicking the football
  • Players may not throw the football

Who can play?

Anyone over the age of 16 who wants to get involved is most welcome. No experience is necessary! We also have a youth program for anyone interested under 16.

What do I need to play?

Just some athletic gear – shirt, shorts, socks and cleated shoes. We’ll provide the Gaelic football, but feel free to purchase one of your own for at-home practice. If you are planning to play in any competitions, you will need a mouth guard as well.

Do you play in any competitions?

The great thing about playing with us is that you can make it as social or as competitive as you like. If you just want to come along on a weekly basis to hit the ball around and hang out after practice, great.

Then, if you wish to play in games and tournaments even better. We are a team in the Southeast Division of the USGAA and host games and tournaments right here in Raleigh. We also travel to tournaments in cities such as Winston-Salem and Charlotte NC, Richmond and Hampton Roads VA, Atlanta and Augusta GA, and Charleston and Greenville, SC. See our calendar for full details.

Can I bring a friend?

Absolutely. If you think a friend may be interested in giving it a try, bring them along too. It’s how most people get started.

Is it expensive or dangerous?

Gaelic football & hurling are not expensive or dangerous sports to play. We’ll show you the correct techniques to ensure your safety on the field and provide the equipment to give it a shot.
