Hurling and camogie are Irish outdoor team sports promoted by Ireland’s Gaelic Athletic Association. Both sports feature players using a stick, known as the hurley, to hit the ball, known as the sliotar, into or above the opponent’s net. Players carry the ball up the field both in the hand, and by balancing the sliotar on the end of the hurley. Hurling is traditionally played by men, while camogie is traditionally played by women. The rules are almost identical between hurling and camogie, but there are a few differences. These are both high-paced sports, and hurling is often referred to as “The Fastest Game on Grass.”
Basics
- Hitting the sliotar over the bar and between the uprights counts as one point. Inside the net is three
- Players may carry the ball in hand for up to 4 steps (but as long as they like on the hurley)
- Players must pick the sliotar up off the ground using the hurley
- Players may pass the ball either by striking with the hurley or with the hand
For more information on both sports, see the Wikipedia page for hurling and camogie.
Raleigh GAA Hurling and Camogie
Who can play?
Male athletes (age 17) and female athletes (age 15 for Camogie and 17 for LGFA) are welcome to play! No experience is necessary!
What do I need to play?
Just some athletic gear – shirt, shorts, socks and cleated shoes. Hurls and helmets will be provided by the club, though you are welcome to purchase your own as well.
Do you play in any competitions?
The great thing about playing with us is that you can make it as social or as competitive as you like. If you just want to come along on a weekly basis to hit the ball around and hang out after practice, great.
Then, if you wish to play in games and tournaments even better. We are a team in the Southeast Division of the USGAA and host games and tournaments right here in Raleigh. We also travel to tournaments in cities such as Winston-Salem and Charlotte NC, Richmond and Hampton Roads VA, Atlanta and Augusta GA, and Charleston and Greenville, SC. See our calendar for full details.
Can I bring a friend?
Absolutely. If you think a friend may be interested in giving it a try, bring them along too. It’s how most people get started.
