What is Gaelic football & hurling?

Gaelic football & hurling are two, traditional Irish field sports and two of the five Gaelic games promoted by Ireland’s Gaelic Athletic Association.

Both games are gaining more and more popularity in the U.S. due to their fast pace, high skill and action-packed play. The advent of online video has also helped to capture the imagination of American audiences. Please visit our Videos page to see the action!

The Raleigh Cú Chulainn Club was established in the Spring of 2012 to promote Irish sports in the triangle area of North Carolina. The goals of the club are to:

  • Introduce the sport of Gaelic football, hurling & Camogie to our community,
  • Continue to grow our local league, and
  • Participate successfully in intrastate, regional and national tournaments.

Who can play?

Anyone over the age of 16 who wants to get involved is most welcome. No experience is necessary!

We are a friendly and socially active club. We are always excited to meet new people and teach them the games. We welcome anyone interested in learning a new sport, whether the goal is to compete at a high level or simply to get in shape while meeting new people.

Our members have a wide variety of experiences, from American-born beginners to County level (top Irish level) and any of our players are more than happy to show you the basics of the games.

What do I need to play?

Just some athletic gear – shirt, shorts, socks and cleated shoes. We’ll provide the Gaelic football or a hurl & helmet to get you started. If you choose Gaelic football no further equipment is needed. However if you are more passionate about hurling then you will want to purchase your own helmet. Hurls will be provided by the club, though you are welcome to purchase your own as well.

Do you play in any competitions?

The great thing about playing with us is that you can make it as social or as competitive as you like. If you just want to come along on a weekly basis to hit the ball around and hang out after practice, great.

Then, if you wish to play in games and tournaments even better. We are a team in the Southeast Division of the USGAA and host games and tournaments right here in Raleigh. We also travel to tournaments in cities such as Winston-Salem and Charlotte NC, Richmond and Hampton Roads VA, Atlanta and Augusta GA, and Charleston and Greenville, SC. See our calendar for full details.

Can I bring a friend?

Absolutely. If you think a friend may be interested in giving it a try, bring them along too. It’s how most people get started.

Is it expensive or dangerous?

Gaelic football & hurling are not expensive or dangerous sports to play. We’ll show you the correct techniques to ensure your safety on the field and provide the equipment to give it a shot.
