Holy City Hurling Cup in Charleston on Saturday
Reigning Gleeson Cup champions Raleigh descend on Charleston to win more silverware at this Saturday’s Holy City Hurling Cup. We will be joined by Atlanta, Greenville, Hampton Roads teams. The tournament will take place at the same park as it did last year; Danny Jones Recreation Complex, 1455 Monitor St, N. Charleston, SC, 29405. Restrooms and concessions will be available again.

The games will be 11-a-side with Junior C ruling in on-field Irish players (which is 3 and an additional 2 on the panel).

The format will be 5-team pool play with the two teams with the best “record” advancing to the final – see schedule below. The games will be 25 minute halves with 10 minutes half-time. Every team is responsible for the referee duties of one game. No team has to ref beforetheir games – we understand it can be hard to get warmed up and ready for a game when half of your team are involved in the game at hand. In addition to a ref, each team must have a few lads to take care of linesman and umpire duties. While this is a friendly tournament, we still want to ensure the rules are enforcedPlease ensure your hurlers are respectful of all ref decisions. We also need to ensure that our umpires and linesmen are aware of their responsibility.

This was a great time last year and not to be missed. The weather forecast is looking beautiful.

Saint Catherine of Siena Catholic Church Contrada Festival, Saturday April 26th in Wake Forest (Volunteers needed)
Saint Catherine of Siena Catholic Church located at 520 W Holding Avenue in Wake Forest will be holding their annual Contrada Festival on Saturday, April 26th from 10 am until 4 pm. The Contrada Festival promises to be a great day with entertainers of all kinds (musicians, singers, dancers, puppeteers and face painters), Bounce Houses and great Inflatables for all ages, food for all tastes, raffles of all kinds and Contrada competitions all day long.

The Raleigh GAA Club will have a tent set up for the Festival on the Church grounds. We expect about 3,000 to attend the Festival throughout the day so it will be another great opportunity to recruit for the club. We will be putting together a number of activities for the kids in an effort to get them to sign up for the upcoming Raleigh GAA Youth Summer Camp. We could really use all the help we can get from our members. If you can help out for any duration at all during the day, please let us know.

Winston-Salem V Raleigh, inaugural Gaelic Football game in aid of Mary Philbin at Poteat Field, Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, NC (Sun April 27th for a 12pm throw-in)
Tim Cronin has been working hard to start a GAA club in Winston-Salem since he moved there late last year, and Raleigh GAA has been invited to play Winston-Salem GAA in its first ever Gaelic football game this Sunday. Don’t miss out on this historic first which is in aid of cancer survivor Mary Philbin for whom Raleigh GAA and Winston-Salem GAA collected $1200 at the trivia nights and will be presenting as a check on Sunday. You can check out Mary’s incredible story, and also donate online here http://www.youcaring.com/medical-fundraiser/mary-s-journey-of-hope/45975

This is also the closest away game Raleigh GAA will get all year and is a perfect spring board for the rest of the season – it’s about a 1 hr 40 minute drive. Winston-Salem GAA has 11 confirmed already, and Raleigh GAA has 9 confirmed. Let’s not be shown up for numbers by a club that is not even officially set up yet – we’re in need of a few more players! After the game, it’s back to Tim’s house for some of the finest coffee porter homebrews west of the Haw River! Or for a good auld cup of Barry’s tea if you so please. Please email info@raleighgaa.com to coordinate car-pooling for Sunday morning.
