Connolly Cup 2014

July 28, 2014

It was a case of so near but yet so far for Raleigh’s footballers. In the semi final, Raleigh produced a very dominant

performance against Charlotte’s B team on a scoreline of 4-10 to 0-2. Early 1st half goals killed the game as a contest. Debutant Dermot McElhennon gave a strong corner back performance and Gerry Farrell had his first ever clean sheet as goalkeeper of Raleigh! In the final Raleigh were up against red hot favourites Charlotte’s A team. Despite slippery conditions, Raleigh stormed to a 0-4 to 0-3 lead. Charlotte then got a fortunate goal when a shot for a point dropped agonisingly into the top corner despite Gerry Farrell’s best efforts. Down 1-6 to 0-4 at half time, Raleigh battled back again come within 4 points. However, with 5 minutes left, Charlotte were awarded a dodgy penalty which they converted. Soon after they got another goal as Raleigh pushed upfield in a last gasp attempt to get the goal we needed. So although it was a disappointing end, the effort of all involved should be complemented and the perfomance augurs well with Nationals in Boston only a month away!
