Trivia night Fundraiser for cancer survivor Mary Philbin
The GAA abroad is not just about Irish communities (and Irish-American, and American!) meeting up to hit balls around fields. It’s about coming together, having the craic, and also helping each other out when needed. There is a very brave young Irish girl living in Winston-Salem called Mary Philbin who has beaten cancer and could now do with a bit of financial help to cover the costs. To that end, Raleigh GAA is hosting a Trivia night fundraiser tonight (Wednesday 16th April) from 7pm to 9pm to help raise some much needed funds for Mary.

Eight years ago, Mary was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma and although she has been cured of the cancer she is living with the after effects of chemotherapy and she has undergone several surgeries over the past 18 months. She moved from Ireland to Winston-Salem specifically for the treatment she can get there. You can read about Mary’s incredible story here www.maryphilbin.com

By participating in the trivia night, hosted by quizmaster extraordinaire Hugh Ellard, you’ll automatically be entered into the main prize draw. Tickets to the trivia night are $20 per person ($80 for a team of maximum 4 people), collected on the night. Please note that this is not a fundraiser for Raleigh GAA  – it is more important than that, and all proceeds go to Mary Philbin’s fund. Please reply to info@raleighgaa.com if you intend on participating. A percentage of food and drink sales purchased by participants of the trivia night will also go towards Mary’s fund, so please arrive hungry and thirsty! You can also make a donation directly to Mary’s fund through the link above.

Other related Fundraisers
Winston-Salem GAA (in the works with Tim Cronin driving that and these fundraisers!) hosted a trivia night last night (Tuesday 15th April) which was a great success. Raleigh GAA and Winston-Salem GAA will present a joint check to Mary Philbin at the inaugural Raleigh GAA vs Winston-Salem GAA game on the Sunday April 27th with throw in at noon. The venue has been confirmed as the Poteat Field at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC

Regular Season GAA Training
One final date to mark is Monday April 21st at 6:30 pm at 7417 Poole Rd. –  the start of regular season training towards winning division title silverware at Nationals 2014 in Boston, MA!

Hurling – The Holy City Cup, Saturday April 26th in Charleston, SC
Charleston have their annual Holy City Cup hurling tournament on Saturday week, April 26th. They are also running a youth blitz, which is a training camp for underage hurlers (Similar to the cul camp we’re arranging for this summer).

If you’re interested in playing in the tournament, let us know by Friday. At the minute, we haven’t confirmed if we’re sending a full team, as we need to know numbers first.

Obviously Charleston and Greenville are bursting to play us to avenge their unexpected loss to us in the Gleeson Cup. And if we can put out a team like we did last time, we’ve a very good chance of winning this one, too.

So if you want some silverware for your house, you want to bring your kids along to the youth camp, or you want to bring the family to see Charleston that weekend, let us know (info@raleighgaa.com).
